Jaora, History of Jaora

Wednesday, November 19, 2014

We kick started the very same day by visiting the Dargah's in its premises.

A little bit of history for starters. Mohsin is well versed with the history of this place. So he was both my guide and historian on this journey.

As per him, this shrine of Hussain Tekri was built by the Nawab of Jaora, Mohammad Iftikhar Ali Khan Bahadur, in the 19th century, situated on the outskirts of Jaora town in the Ratlam district of Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, India.

The Nawab was buried in the same graveyard where Hussain Tekri was built.

Thousands of people from all over the world visit these shrines.

He introduced me to a term called "Hajri", Hajri means to pay a visit. People who are mentally sick visit this place in large numbers to relieve themselves from being possessed by Jinns, Ghosts and Demons. The best thing is that there is no human involved here. These demon creatures have long dialogue with the Deities in the shrines, and finally surrender and leave the bodies of the victims.

Jaora, Return Journey

Sunday, July 27, 2014

My return journey was again by the same train which bought me here i.e. Udaipur Express. The train was to arrive at Jaora Station at 2:44 AM, only to arrive at Borivali Station at 1:47 PM the next morning.

Mohsin his brothers and Satish came to see me off.

I kick started my journey by sleeping. As I am not used to sleeping in the train a small jerk would awake me, but finally sleep had taken over.

The next morning when I had woken up the train had reached Bharuch. We were a long way from home.

A few of Krishna’s bhakts had their seats next to mine. They sang, played their musical instruments and danced the entire journey in that compartment till we reached Borivali. Their music was soothing to my ears, but when I took out my camera, they weren’t very happy so I immediately put it back inside.

Finally I was at Borivali station. My Jaora trip had officially come to an end. I was a bit unhappy in my initial days at Hussain Tekri as I couldn’t travel but Sujapur and  Bhora Mangra made my trip worth it. To top it beef spiced up the entire journey.

I am thankful to Mohsin and his family for the hospitality they have shown towards me.  I dedicate this blog post to him.

Jaora, Poor Vehicles

Tuesday, July 22, 2014

I hope these poor vehicles get a make over at Pimp My Ride. This team is known to do wonders to automobiles.

Jaora, Haveli in Jaora

Saturday, July 19, 2014

I saw this massive Haveli in Jaora.

By the look of it, didn't look like it was occupied.

This Haveli would have looked splendid in its glory days, but now see the state of it.

Good spot to shoot a horrow movie, what say?

Jaora, The Horse Ride

Sunday, July 13, 2014

Mohsin had informed me that one of his cousins here has a horse and is one of the best horsemen.

I immediately informed him that I would not only love to sit in his horse cart but also ride it, if given a chance.

Finally Ahmed arrived with his horse cart. The cart and the horse looked vintage. As the horse moved along the roads the people looked as us.

We felt nice sitting in the horse cart while people around us zoomed in their cars but all eyes were on us. Gave me Celebrity like feeling that too on a horse cart.

Riding a horse cart is very difficult, though Ahmed drives it with ease. I tried my hands on it and found out how difficult it actually is.

Thanks Mohsin my Jinn for full filling my wish.

Jaora, Bheja Fry with Rumali Roti

Saturday, July 12, 2014

This perhaps the best Bheja Fry I had, till date. It was made of Bheja, deep fried in Beef gravy. Served hot with Rumali Roti.

For a change there was no egg in it. Though I have always had it with Egg.

It was finger lickng good. I liked it so much that I had aa second serving of it.

Price is Rs. 20 for the below served across Hussain Tekri.

Jaora, cylinders stacked near the road

Friday, July 11, 2014

Cylinders chained and held captive near one of the roads in Jaora.

No one was around to watch over them.

Good time to make a quick steal, but you can't steal one, instead you have to take them all. Now that is going to be quiet a task.

Jaora, Water Tanker

A water tanker attached to a Tractor. The wheels of the tractor are beautifully painted to match the body of the tractor. Nice paintings on the water tanker also.

Jaora, Dargah in the City of Jaora

Thursday, July 10, 2014

We took the services of a Tum Tum driven by Shah Rukh to explore the city. We came across this structure made of red stone with fortification around it.

One look at the structure and it gives, a eerry feeling.

It was old and unmaintained and so had creepers growing all around it. It had a huge wooden door which was locked. A small chor darwaza lets one inside it. The windows of it were beautifully carved. The architecture reminded me of the forts in Rajasthan.

There is a dargah in its premises.

We sat in its premises for a couple of minutes. I felt nice sitting here. The sound of the birds chirping, the sound of the leaves swaying in the wind was music to my ears. A few squirrel in the premises kept moving freely though we humans were next to it. They had no fear at all.

Shahrukh didn’t let me go to the top storey stating that the Jinns exist there. So I stayed put.

To which Mohsin corrected him that there are no Jinns, but as there is a heavy growth of trees there are snakes. Now I don’t know which of them is true, but I still stayed put.

Jaora, The Beef Samosa Shop

Wednesday, July 9, 2014

This shop is run by a Bori Muslim in Jaora. His specialty is that he makes amazing beef samosas and kebabs.  He bought this place to convert it into a hotel.  He informed us that he doesn’t stay here but conducts business here.

The shop was a storey tall. The windows were made of wood. The wood was darkened due to the smoke emitted from the burning of wood used in the cooking of the samosa’s.  Though he occupied only the front of it, he still let us inside to visit his shop. How nice of him.

It is a single storey structure, the windows and doors still intact. The top storey had wooden flooring. The walls are made of brick. Though the houses next to it have been re developed but this one stays intact. A rickety staircase leads to the top storey. We were trying to locate the stairway and we finally found it. But we didn’t go up as we were worried that it might give in with our weight.

This structure was rectangular in shape. It was dark inside so we were hoping not to crash into anything. In a distance we could see the light. A small 5mv watt bulb provided light.

We found a few porcelain pots in its premises. They have been there since decades.
Mohsin said that though he visits this place every time he comes here, he has never been inside it. Amazing find.

Jaora, Beef Samosa and Kebabs

Tuesday, July 8, 2014

Here are the pics of the Beef Samosa and Kebabs we had at Jaora.

This was the first time I tasted these, trust me they were finger licking good. How I wanted to get some of them home, but couldn't perishable item , you see.

Jaora, Deities vs. Demons

Thursday, July 3, 2014

I saw a couple of people with chains on their hands and feet accompanied by family members. The chains are put to ensure that they don't do any sort of harm or damage to themselves and to the people around.

These people are normal throughout the day, it’s only when they have to give Hajri then they tend to get a bit violent. Hajri is given twice a day, once in the morning and the second time in the afternoon. Violent is because the demons in them make them do strange things.

There is no human for e.g. a tantrik or priest involved. The Deities have a direct conversation with the possessed. As per Mohsin this has always been the case. The people travel from one shrine to another on foot. Once they are gathered at the first shrine, Incence is showered on the people so that they can be cured of their mental sickness. This process is followed at all shrines.

Mohsin also told me, that the process of healing doesn't happen overnight. Some take months to heal, other years. These people are given accommodation in one of the lodges in Hussain Tekri. The accommodation and food cost is subsidized. These people can't leave the premises until they are cured. If they wish to go then they have to take permission from the managing committee. Though these people roam freely in its premises they cannot stray outside. The power of the Shrines is so strong that these people cannot leave until they are cured.

Satish told me that in the villages people do black magic for ridiculous reasons. E.g. new house, new vegetable cart etc... Due to which these poor people have to suffer, sometimes for the rest of their lives. I don’t understand what sadistic pleasure they get by doing these things. This is reality.

I saw a man there who was possessed by the spirit of a Eunuch. A woman who was possessed by the spirit of an acrobat. The lady was wearing a burka and doing acrobats. But these activities happen only when they have to pay the Hajri. As that is the time they come in direct contact with the Deities.  Otherwise they are normal just like you and me.

Apart from the shrines Hussain Tekri also houses lodges and hotels who are frequently visited by people.

Most of the people who visit this place are poor villagers, who suffer due to black magic. They themselves are not aware as to why black magic is done but they have to live with it till they are cured of it.

Mohsin is a very spiritual person and so he decided to pay all the shrines a visit. One by one we visited all of them. The shrines are not open throughout the day. They are kept open only when it is time for the Hajri. A huge crowd gathers in that time and after that it soon disappears. Just wondering where they are coming from and where they go.

I had a good time enjoying the food here. Beef all the way. I started with breakfast, brunch, lunch, evening snacks and then dinner. Food is so cheap here. I wish it was the same in Mumbai. If wishes were horses, men would ride.

We then headed off outside Jaora to see the shrines there. The next two shrines I am going to talk about is the best part of the trip. That actually made my day.

Jaora, Introduction to Jaora

Thursday, May 29, 2014

Introduction to Jaora:

I was first introduced to Hussain Tekri by my colleague Mohsin Shaikh in our training sessions. He told me about his paranormal encounters at this place. As a traveler this place excited me.  I wanted to witness paranormal activities hence I decided to accompany him on this trip.  As a matter of fact, I don’t watch horror movies as they scare the shit out of me, but when you have company you need not worry. Be it company of the human kind or the spirit kind.

Hussain Tekri as defined  by my office colleague and good friend Mohsin is a place frequently visited by Muslims from all over the country and the world, to get rid of evil possession. It did sound a bit scary earlier when he described the place to me. He told me about people chained so that they do not create harm to themselves and to others. I know it is a sad sight to see.

I was in two minds whether I should visit this place or not. As one part of me wanted to see this place and the other was shit scared because of the paranormal activities. Another reason that boosted me to visit this place is the meat it had to offer. Beef. I am a big fan of it. When I was told about the beef dishes prepared here, I couldn’t stop myself from visiting this place.

I had to convince my folk’s in order to visit this place. So when I, initially told them about this place. My Mom said a BIG NO. I still wanted to see this place. I somehow managed to convince my Mom about it. Finally she agreed.

I informed Mohsin about it, as he had to book tickets in advance. It was not just the two of us but his entire family.

We managed to get both the tickets and our holidays confirmed to visit this place.

Just before our trip, my office colleagues advised me on the Do's and Don’ts to be done in a village. They were under the impression that this is my maiden trip to a village. They were not aware that I had been to villages before and that I have a blog that caters to places to visit in India.

I should have promoted my blog in office is the lesson I have learnt.

A day before my trip my Mom asked me, "You sure you going, or have you changed your mind?" to which I replied, "Mom, don't worry, nothing will go wrong. I have Mohsin and his family around me."

She smiled and said, "Go, travel safely and do call every day."
