Delhi : Khan-I-Khanan Tomb near Humayun Tomb Complex

Khan-I-Khanan Tomb is located very close to Humayun Tomb Complex. It is located on the Rahim Khan Marg which is off the Mathura Road. 

Khan-I-Khanan Tomb

It was built Abdur Rahim Khan-I-Khanan (1556 to 1627 AD). He served both Akbar and Jehangir in his lifetime. He constructed the tomb on his wife's death in 1598. He was later buried there in 1627 AD. For history of the tomb, please refer to the photos.

The tomb has a garden around it, it was made of red sandstone, I found similarities in the design, as it was similar to Humayun Tomb in Humayun Tomb Complex. Except that the latter is more grand than this one. Again it didn't have any visitors apart from Rohan and me.

The tomb is placed on the first level. The tomb structure is not in very good condition, as portions of it have fallen down over the years, and no effort is taken in maintaining what remains of it, is clearly visible.

We sat here for sometime, it was almost dusk now, we then decided to head to India Gate.

The India Gate is a war memorial located near the Rajpath.

The India Gate was also called as All India War Memorial by the British, it was built in memory of the 82,000 soldiers who died fighting in the First World War from 1914 to 1921 in various countries. The names of the soldiers are inscribed on the Gate walls. It was inaugurated in February 1931 by Viceroy, Lord Irwin. 

India Gate was designed by Edwin Lutyens, who used to specialize in War Memorials.

On the Monument below the word India, is mentioned "TO THE DEAD OF THE INDIAN ARMIES WHO FELL HONOURED IN FRANCE AND FLANDERS MESOPOTAMIA AND PERSIA EAST AFRICA GALLIPOLI AND ELSEWHERE IN THE NEAR AND THE FAR-EAST AND IN SACRED MEMORY ALSO OF THOSE WHOSE NAMES ARE RECORDED AND WHO FELL IN INDIA OR THE NORTH-WEST FRONTIER AND DURING THE THIRD AFGHAN WAR"

India Gate

Due to security reasons one cannot come close to it. It is guarded by soldiers. But special permissions are taken for movie shoots. Hece you will see India Gate featuring in many Bollywood movies like Rang De Basanti.

India Gate

Amar Jawan Jyoti, or the flame of the immortal soldier, is constructed near the foot of India Gate. It is a structure made of black marble, on which is placed a reversed rifle, capped by war helmet, bound by four urns, each with the permanent light i.e. jyoti.
It was built to remind us of the soldiers who died fighting in the India Pakistan War which was fought in December 1971.
